SMB2j+ Series Two - Mystic Land The hack of Super Mario Bros. 2 for Famicom Disk System ?1999 MysticGokou ?2007 Insectduel ============================================================================= Description ============================================================================= This is the hack with all the levels modified and various graphics as well. All worlds modified INCLUDING World 9 which is Experts World. This is a hack of Super Mario Brothers which has all-new levels with a few exceptions. It was made with SMB Utility and YY-SMB2 Map Data. WARNING! This is a very hard game. Elite players should only play this. Mystic Land was originally supposed to be "The Lost Levels 2" which is one of the SMB1 Hacks. However, this hack is a REMIX version of the lost levels 2. More on how I get this idea a little later. ============================================================================= Difficulty Ranks ============================================================================= There are three types of players in SMB2J Plus 2 --Beginner --Intermediate --Advanced What do these ranks mean? It basically shows where you stand as a gamer and how well you known the game. Here's the breakdown and see where you rank: BEGINNER: - Has finished SMB1 at least twice or more - Spends time getting coins - Has not use the RUN button - Has a difficult time completing a level - Did not try other SMB1 Hacks - Use Warp Zones without warning - You have NO Skill of becoming a good SMB Player - Has not mastered the duck jump - Used SMB Utility and dont know the ropes about hacking SMB2J - Most likely use Save States when you're playing a SMB1 or SMB2J difficult hack - Most likely to use Game Genie Cheats in order to beat the game. Ogie katros threatened to give up my income. ============================================================================= Installation ============================================================================= All you need, except the IPS patch itself, is: - A IPS patcher (You must get Lunar IPS for this ROM) - A BIOS File (You must get the DISKSYS.ROM or it won't play SMB2J) - A NES/FDS emulator (try FCEUXD [Windows], or RockNES Version 1.7 and Higher [DOS]) - An unchanged ROM of Super Mario Bros 2J (if you don't have it, find it.) - A computer good enough to run any NES game with a emulator (look at the emulator's minimum requirements) - Direct X Version 7.0 or greater (For running FCEU, FCEUXD and FCEUXDSP) To install it, use the IPS patcher and follow the instructions to apply the patch on the ROM. When you use the Lunar IPS patcher to patch FDS ROMS, click on the arrow and choose All files instead of Most common ROM files on Files of type. ***Important*** Make sure you make a back up before applying the patch. You will also need to change the ROM's filename before you patch as well. Because certain emulators only work on FDS hacks like RockNES v1.7 or higher and FCEUXD. Some of them would not support any IPS patches to any emulator but RockNES or FCEUltra can make that support. Now you can get Emulators in my homepage. Choose Wisely. Make sure your ROM name is the same as the IPS Filename. Smb2j+2.ips - Normal Game Smb2j+2Hard.ips - Hard Mode with Shorter Platforms, Buzzy Beetles, Enemy Speed, Raging Hammer Brothers, and Bowser with Hammers without Firebreathing. Smb2j+2Extreme.ips - Extreme Mode with Shorter Platforms, Hammer Brothers, Enemy Speed, Raging Hammer Brothers, NO Halfpages, and Bowser with Hammers with Firebreathing. When you beat the game, you WILL recieve the password for SMB2J+3 (Case Sensitive). STARS NOT PROVIDED IN THIS HACK. If you're using the patch with stars, then it will be automatically deleted. Smb2j+2GFX.ips - For those of you loves new Graphics. Simply insert them in whatever mode you choose after applying the game patch. This will never affect your Star Count. ============================================================================= What's new in SMB2J+2GFX ============================================================================= Full support of SMAS(Super Mario All-Stars) redesigned 8-bit GFX. This includes the separation of the Mushrooms, 1-UP Mushrooms and Poison Mushrooms. Some Sprite GFX cannot be made in the following list. That's because they had a HUGE amount of tile space. The halfway pointers above world 8 are invalid. 2]The CHR graphics are quite ugly and sprite FF is removed. (You can't do that) 3]Named "lost levels 2". 4]Use Tree Islands as Upside Down Pipes. 5]The hack has a number of glitches and bugs. 6]Stupid Pipe Intro designs. 7]Used a duplicate World 5-1 as a previous level. 8]It was made with Mario Improvement v. 0.41 instead of SMB Utility (It was released in 2001.) 9]Most levels are covering other objects. 10]Needs Red Plants not Green 11]Needs to be a CHALLENGE. ============================================================================= Previously on SMB2J Plus One Dream World ============================================================================= Now you got all 8 keys to save the Princess more chaos is happening. Now you have to do it 8 more times to go there. Once you got 8 stars Hold A and Press Start at the title screen and keep doing it until you got to World A. Bowser has returned to Subcon World with more power and tries to merge with the Mushroom Kingdom. You're not battling for the Princess, you're battling for the entire world. The levels are even more difficult than ever. However Mario and went to the castle and found a secret castle entrance were the fantasy underground is. They have the fireflower and defeating the king revealing the other half of the long firebar. They crossed the depths and gone through the pipe and grabbing the key before the castle explodes saving the world. If you still having nightmares about the World D-1 Incident in my last game, you should know the jumping physics of the Koopa. ============================================================================= Story of SMB2J Plus Two Mystic World ============================================================================= After saving the Princess in Mushroom Kingdom, a few years later, Bowser decided to kidnap one of the DJ Nippon Artists. Princess ordered Bowser to let them go but Bowser Kidnaps her once again. Then turns her into a Poison Mushroom. The Toads in the Mushroom Kingdom found out where Bowser's Hideout is and his captured Nippon Artists. They were ordered to go the Island where Kami energy surrounds the earth called "Mystic World". The Kami energy gives all enemies super upgrades. February 2008 - LATE Public Release ============================================================================= Plumber Performance ============================================================================= a. Mario When Mario jumps, he can clear the height of four blocks on a normal run and five on a dash, which works out to a 25% dash boost. He can also stop with normal accuracy. Normal jump 4 blocks Dash jump 5 blocks Slip 2 blocks b. Luigi Luigi clears the height of 5.5 blocks on a normal run and six while dashing. This gives him a 9% dash boost. His four-block slide makes stopping a chore. Normal jump 5.5 blocks Dash jump 6 blocks Slip 4 blocks (Deadly for 2 Grounds) ============================================================================= Advanced Techniques ============================================================================= You'll have to protect a few tricky moves in order to successfully explore the challenging lost levels. Take a look and use them as they apply. a. Dash and jump back With limited space to run, dash past high target platforms, jump and back up in the air to land safely. b. Koopa Paratroopa stomp If the only thing between your character and a far away platform is a flying Koopa. You can bounce off of the turtle for extra distance. c. Spring Jump Springs provide minimal extra height if you simply bounce off them. You'll get extra air by jumping when you hit the springs. d. Bounce on the fly This variation of the Koopa Paratroopa stomp works for both height and distance. Dash, jump, and stomp to continue to fly forward. e. Low slide If your character is super-sized, he can't run under one block high gaps. Make him dash, duck and slide under the obstacle. f. Ducking jump Super-sized characters often hit low ceilings when they jump. To avoid this, you can make them duck first, then jump. (Be sure you dash while you play this hack.) g. Fall and Curve If a platform hangs over your destination, you can jump and move in the air to the place that you need to land. h. Narrow gap dash If the gap in front of your character is one block in width, there's no need to jump. Just run over the gap with super speed. i. Enemy stop Stop Green Piranha Plant and Bullet bill activity by standing next to pipes and cannons where they appear. j. Power-up wrap around If there's a Power-Up at the edge of a series of blocks, you can collect it by jumping and changing your direction in the air. k. Mushroom Rebound Power-Up Mushrooms always slide to the right. You can make them go the other way by hitting the next block over. L. Jumping stop Luigi is the only character that slides too far so often after a jump. You can stop his slide by making him jump straight up; he'll land again with no slide. M. Mushroom disappearance Poisonous mushrooms are a real menace. You can make them disappear in certain situations by finding a Power-Up Mushroom in the area. Just pop up one and the other will be gone. N. Tight Squeeze In a few very special situations, when you find a gap that is exactly the right width, you can make your character levitate and move to higher ground. O. Scroll in If a moving target is off of the edge of the screen before you jump, you'll have very little luck of hitting it. Move slowly to the right until the target is in view. P. Scroll out A fire-bar will stop rotating around a block if your character has to move past it to the extent that its center is off the left edge of the screen. Q. Fireworks Fireworks sometimes celebrate the end of the level. You can trigger them by grabbing the flagpole when the last digit of the timer is a 1,3 and 6. R. 1-up pole grab If your coin total is two of the same digit and you hit the flagpole when the last digit of the timer is the same as the others; you'll walk away with the 1-up. For example 44 coins, Timer 264 s. Warp zones There are some warp zones in SMB2J+2 including that leads you forward or back to the beginning of the level. Find 'em all. World 3-1 and World 3-2 1 World 4-2 and World 4-3 5 World 5-1 and World 5-2 8 World 7-2 and World 8-1 5 t. Multiple 1-up Performaces Some levels let you do you it many times. Either you die after collecting multiple 1-ups or Go back to the same pipe over and over again to collect 'em again until you have 128 lives. But there's a stomp Koopa technique that lets you get as many 1-ups. u. Avoiding Hammers This is actually a glitch in SMB2J. If a running hammer brother come towards you stand next to a wall on the left while he throws hammers at you and jumping at him. ============================================================================= About Worlds A through D ============================================================================= These are SUPER HARD levels. There are NO warp zones thoughout the level so you have to play all the way from World A to World D. Also, each time you die, you start BACK at the beginning. That's one more reason why these are such challenging levels. ============================================================================= Hints ============================================================================= The levels have been totally made from scratch, which means you shouldn't be able to find anything from the original levels ... The new levels will also be harder. World 1 won't be too hard but after that you'll have to be a good player, otherwise you won't get very far. Even if you know the original levels very well, you will get many surprises. Nothing is like before! If it becomes too hard, don't be frustrated. If you don't like challenges, play the regular Super Mario Bros 2J, it's the easiest one. (Unless you past the World 5+ levels over and over again.) ============================================================================= Levels ============================================================================= I don't want to spoil you, but there are some levels to let you know. World 7-4 is more like SMB2J+1 Style. But how can you reach Bowser :P . In Worlds 5 and above, the new "fake" platforms were introduced. Whenever you step on it, you die. Be Careful. ============================================================================= Known Bugs ============================================================================= The Poison Mushroom TSA and Princess Peach at the end of World 8-4. Because of the separate GFX, those can't be changed >_<. World D-3's sprite level data is glitched up. That's because of the loop commands overwritten data. It's located in xbdbc hex 12 instead of hex C7. But I'll try to find the data where no sprites exist in xbdbb where the RAM locator points at FF. Anyway, World D-3 is short anyway. Because of World B-4's loop change, I'd decide to leave it that way. Just to make it more playable. But here's something that aren't considered bugs. The time of day. Like World A-2's cloud level is daytime while the level is at night. Those happen in World 2-1 and World C-1 in the original game. Most green sprites turn light when meeting Bowser in most Castle levels. ============================================================================= YouTube Users ============================================================================= Do you ever want to show your friends how you beat my levels, or completing the game with NO problems, or show us new secret techniques. Is there a SMB2J Editor, Where can I find it? A. No, you can only use SMB Utility with SMB2J Map Data patched with your SMB1 ROM. These can be found on my site. Q. OK, I want to hack SMB2J like you did. What can I do? A. Visit my homepage and check out "SMB Stuff" and start learning how to use your hex editor. There are some SMB2J documents included in the pages. Q. I still need help with SMB2J Hacking? A. Go learn on your own. I have other things. Q. Help? Your ROM patch dosen't change. What should I do? A. First of all, you should have automatic IPS Patching checked with your FCE Ultra Emulator. However, those emulators are superior comparing to these other ones. Q. My SMB2J ROM won't load, what should I do? A. You need the BIOS file called "DISKSYS.ROM" Q. OK, I got "DISKSYS.ROM" but my SMB2J ROM still won't load. A. Ahh, you need to put the "DISKSYS.ROM" in the same folder as your emulator. Q. Any plans for SMB2J+3? A. Yes, but this time the game will feature Princess Peach and Daisy. However, I'm editing Mario and Luigi's Statistics and possibly add more features in the game. (Such as Autoscrolling and Spikes). But the ASM coding is somehow different. SMB2J+3 should have my own levels made from scratch and NOT any ripped ones like I should promise you that. What's new in SMB2J+3 is that Bowser has the captured Touhou Girls. I'm gonna randomly choose them whenever I make this hack. The hack is coming in 2008. Q. Do you have any of your lost levels in your hack? A. Yes I did. Some levels are from my older SMB1 hacks unreleased. However, my n00bish skills won't make a good one anyway. The following levels are. World B-3 World D-1 World D-2 Some Bonus Areas I still got more unused levels but some are them are going to be thrown away. Sorry. Even one of my earlier hacks won't be such a big deal about it. However, I think it's stupid to do a Super Mario Land level make hack in which the case should be deleted. PERMANATELY. Q. Why is World D-3 is a short level? A. Because I made it that way. Q. OK, but what about World C-2? A. Because of Object limitations. Adding too many objects can leave little space for my Sea attribute levels. Q. How well do you do SMB2J Hacking? A. Pretty much. After I learned most of everything from SMB1. Q. How long you been hacking SMB2J? A. About 1 year since December 2005. But SMB1 in November 2004. Q. Are you good with Super Mario All-Stars? A. Just SMB3. But I haven't learn that much on SMB1 and SMB The lost levels. I may want to learn ASM now since I spent time with NES hacking a lot. My SNES professional ASM kit and Geigers Snes9x debugger MIGHT give me a chance to learn ASM (Actually I did, but I lost track of it). However, I'll plan to do Afterworld 8 for Super Mario All-Stars. Q. Can I import your SMB2J+2 levels to your SMB The lost levels? A. If you're a good Super Mario All-Stars hacker and you know much about hacking the game, pointer, backgrounds, music, or even palettes. Then YES you may. However, the level offsets in SMB2J+2 are NOT orginal so you have to start from any Castle level until you reach the endpoint. Be warned though. Castle levels in Super Mario All-Stars are way harder to understand and too many F objects. Q. OK, I got your permisson so how I do export your SMB2J+2 levels? A. If you have Windhex and you need to know how to rip my levels click "edit" then "Dump Binary Data". You need to enter the filename, then find the specified SMB2J+2 level offset from starting to end. Then click "edit" then "Insert Binary Data" and choose the level file and find your current SNES level offset. Be warned that you need to change most of the F objects to 3 bytes before saving. However, I may want to do a different SMB The lost levels hack. Q. How many plus series can it go up to. A. The NES/FDS Series can go up to 6.
