Don’t think this is gonna be a 100% Gold Remake, it’ll have its differences. Extra battles (some’ll be optionals, tough but rewarding), Hoenn Pokemon (in every area, and hard to find) New areas, Remapped some dungeons (so your old guides wont work) , Extra recurring characters (some’ll hate you, some’ll help you)
Note that the hack is incomplete but feel free to enjoy the hack as-is.

Introduction | | | +-----------------+ Thank you for downloading my SCHALA EDITION patch for the SNES version of Chrono Trigger! So, what is the SCHALA EDITION? Simply put, it's a modified version of Chrono Trigger where Schala is recovered during the normal course of events. Saving her is not hidden or bonus content, nor is it an optional sidequest. Please note that Schala is not a playable character; Chrono Trigger limits the game to just seven party members. Some ambitious people are working on an eighth character expansion mod, but I think that's still a ways into the future. It's something I'd like to tackle someday, but... not now. The mod is based off of the 1995 release of Chrono Trigger using the infamous Ted Woolsey translation. However, the ROM has been expanded, allowing for a lot more text, scenes, maps, enemies, etc. than are found in the vanilla game. My goal was to create a scenario with Schala similar to what I expected the first time I played Chrono Trigger way back in 1995. Also, with this being the SCHALA EDITION, Schala has additional appearances during a few scenes, including all versions of the main ending. As with my PLAYABLE GOLBEZ EDITION and GENERAL LEO EDITION hacks, I want this to feel like a version of the game from another reality where the designers decided to wrap up the Schala subplot neatly. I don't want it to feel like weird fanfiction. Hopefully I succeeded. This hack does not ignore Chrono Cross, although how that story would play out in a world where Schala was saved (or if it would happen at all) is a matter of conjecture. My advice while playing would be... if a townsperson mentions one of your party members, take that party member to meet the person, as they will most likely have interaction. Sometimes, other members of your party will even chime in with additional comments. Also, a lot of story arcs for background characters are resolved after the Black Omen, so you might enjoy some extra exploration before the final battle. Enjoy! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * +-------------+ | | | II. Changes | | | +-------------+ Here's a rundown of just about everything that the patch changes. Some behind the scenes and purely cosmetic edits are not listed here. GENERAL: - There's a ton of new text with some new scenes, new NPCs, and lots of new opportunities for characters to interact. - Many items, Techs, enemies, enemy abilities, etc. have had their names and stats adjusted. - "Walking in place" is virtually eliminated. If a person is walking, and you stop them to talk, they will stop moving and face you. - The 1999 AD overworld is now a full map and appears instead of the 1000 AD map during the bad ending. - New map locations were added: - 4 in 1000 AD (only one available from the start) - 1 in 2300 AD (not available from the start) - 3 in 65,000,000 BC (not available from the start) - 8 in 12,000 BC (all on the "Last Village" map) - Everybody in 600 AD now speaks in pseudo-Elizabethan prose. - It's possible to access a few previously unreachable places, such as the area below the rafters in Arris Dome. - The pointless roadblock no longer appears in 1000 AD Guardia Forest during the late game. - Once you get the Epoch it will always be waiting for you at the End of Time; you can't inadvertently "leave" it anywhere. - The flying Epoch won't time travel when you first get it. This isn't a bug; it's part of the story. - If you fail to save Lara, you can try again! You can go back to the grove in Fiona's Forest during the day, but make sure Lucca is in your party when you do. CHARACTERS: - Magus is no longer optional as a party member; he will join as part of the normal story progression. - The second Techs for Crono, Marle and Lucca take a bit longer to learn, but you should still have them before meeting Robo. - Crono, Marle, Lucca and Frog all start with one Tech. Robo starts with two, Ayla with three, and Magus with four. - Marle and Frog both lost *Cure 2 in favor of new final Techs. - Ayla's Tailspin now does Lightning-element damage. - Glenn is always returned to his human form in all versions of the normal ending. - Ending Glenn now more closely resembles his appearance in the PSX ending cut scene. ITEMS: - These items were removed: - HyperEther (overpowered; makes Elixirs less valuable) - Lapis (erodes Heal Beam and Heal specialties of Robo and Frog) - Shield (erodes Protect specialty of Lucca) - Barrier (erodes Shell specialty of Magus) - Power Meal (pointless) - Megalixirs are much more scarce. Only one can be found in a chest and chances to steal from Ruminators are limited. - Several new story items were added (Royal Pin, Bromide, etc.). - There is now only one instance of each Accessory, aside from a few that can be stolen from bosses at the Black Omen. - The colored rocks are changed into superior "final" Accessories, but still grant access to the special Triple Techs. - Most shops have adjustments to their stock, and there are also a few new shops. - The armors at the Ioka trading hut update when the weapons do. ENEMIES: - New enemies were added, including bosses. - Enemies no longer drop items. The only exceptions are the enemies in 65,000,000 BC who drop trading materials. - All enemies Ayla can face have an item to steal. Enemies Alya can never face do not carry items. - Spekkio always starts out with his Kilwala form and only grows into stronger forms after you've beaten him in battle. This means you can face the later forms earlier for extra challenge. - Enemies in Heckran's Cave, aside from the Henches and Heckran, respawn every time the whirlpool warp is accessed. - All enemies and bosses can be fought in each instance of the Black Omen (1000 AD, 600 AD, 12,000 BC). - Lavos no longer goes through a boss medley sequence. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * +-------------------------+ | | | III. Setup Instructions | | | +-------------------------+ You will need the 062519schalahack.ips file as well as an unaltered copy of the Chrono Trigger SNES American release ROM. Recommended ROM: * Chrono Trigger (U) [!] * Unmodified ROM CRC32: 8A36ED76 * Patch Applied CRC32: C3111150 Please do not ask me for ROMs; I will not provide them. I recommend using the Lunar IPS utility to apply the patch to the ROM. As of this writing, you can download Lunar IPS here: http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lips/ To apply the patch: 1.) Open Lunar IPS and click the Apply IPS Patch button. 2.) Select the 062519schalahack.ips file. 3.) Select the ROM to be patched. 4.) You're all set! It's that easy! As far as which emulator to use, I personally like Snes9X. Snes9X has its own website: http://www.snes9x.com/ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * +----------------+ | | | IV. Known Bugs | | | +----------------+ As of 2.0, I'm not able to replicate any reported bugs using the most current version of Snes9X on a desktop machine. However, some users have reported bugs in the past when playing on mobile, including minor graphical errors and some text string problems. For best results, I suggest using the current Snes9X release on a desktop machine. I can't guarantee smooth playback on every platform available. Thanks! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * +-------------------+ | | | V. Special Thanks | | | +-------------------+ This project would not have been possible without the helpful folks at the Chrono Compendium, especially Mauron, who helped me work through countless bugs, headaches and dead ends. I also want to thank everybody who playtested the beta releases, or even just gave general feedback on 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2. I hope you see the ways that much of your input played out and made 2.0 a better experience. Sorry it took six months to get this sucker out! :) <3
