Don’t think this is gonna be a 100% Gold Remake, it’ll have its differences. Extra battles (some’ll be optionals, tough but rewarding), Hoenn Pokemon (in every area, and hard to find) New areas, Remapped some dungeons (so your old guides wont work) , Extra recurring characters (some’ll hate you, some’ll help you)
Note that the hack is incomplete but feel free to enjoy the hack as-is.

INTRODUCTION ________________________________________________________________________________ Final Fantasy VI: Revised Old Style Edition is a thorough and nostalgic revision of the text and presentation of Final Fantasy VI. The purpose of the hack is to bring FF6's superficial elements as close as possible to the standard set by FFOrigins and FF6's immediate successors, while restoring the difficulty of the game's 1994 North American release as designed. Like several other hacks of its kind currently available, FF6:ROSE includes bugfixes, decensored graphics, quality-of-life enhancements, and a revised script based on multiple translation sources, both official (Woolsey, Slattery) and unofficial (KWhazit, Clyde Mandelin, Lina Darkstar, et al.). In addition, FF6:ROSE is distinguished by two primary advancements: 1) Numerous instances of mismatched character dialects, continuity errors, and unnecessary speaker ambiguity in the script have been resolved via dynamic text customization. 2) The names of almost all enemies and items have been retranslated at full length. Originally, these names were limited for technical reasons to 10 and 12 characters, respectively. By rearranging the monospace font graphics, the names of enemies and items have been extended to up to 14 and 16 characters in length, respectively, and only a handful now require abbreviation. Other improvements introduced by this hack: - Ability names have been retranslated at full length, without additional abbreviations or truncations. - A/B button functionality may be swapped in the Config menu. - Soft reset is available via Start+Select+L+R on the field and in battle. - Continuing the game upon defeat is now optional. - Wandering NPCs more readily yield ground to the player character, making navigation through crowded spaces more convenient. - Dialog captions use the quoted text format standardized by FF6's successors. - MP healing & MP damage numerals have been recolored without affecting the reflected spells animation palette. - A limited selection of dummied-out/unfinished character content has been reconstructed. See the Feature Details section for the full list of features. FF6:ROSE is built on a modified version of C. V. Reynold's Multi-Bugfix compilation patch. While a large number of bugs are fixed, all intentional design choices (including poor ones) related to the core RPG mechanics of the original FF6 are retained. The font used for the revised text is based exclusively on the original, adapted as necessary to meet space restrictions. Final Fantasy VI: Revised Old Style Edition has been made possible by the work of many, many FF6 fans and hackers over the years, to whom the author is greatly indebted. See the Credits section for a full list of acknowledgments. ________________________________________________________________________________ 1. FEATURE DETAILS ________________________________________________________________________________ Contents: a. Dialog script revisions b. In-Menu text revisions c. Quality-of-Life enhancements d. Visual enhancements e. Additional modifications f. Bugfixes ======================================== a. Dialog script revisions ======================================== The dialog script has been revised based on multiple translation efforts, both official (Woolsey, Slattery) and unofficial (KWhazit, Clyde Mandelin, Lina Darkstar, et al.). Some phrasing choices have been lifted from other script hacks (FF6:Improvement Project, FF6:TWUE, FF6:StandGuard!) as well. Source materials are listed below. Each prime source is accompanied by a short commentary to give an idea of its impact on the revised script. Prime sources in order of influence: 1) T. Slattery (FF6 Advance) Pros: Official; highly accurate; uses Woolsey as its starting point. Cons: Novelties, occasionally dry/overly-refined phrasing, censorship; Original meaning sometimes obscured by paraphrasing. 2) T. Woolsey (FF3 SNES) Pros: Original localization; high energy, iconic Woolseyisms. Cons: Errors, technical constraints, not-so-beloved Woolseyisms, censorship. 3) kWhazit Pros: Highly accurate; Phrasing impressively uncomplicated given how literal the translation is. Retains, for example, the use of two distinct terms for magic, along with other nuances similarly glossed over by the official translations. Cons: Mostly literal & unlocalized; incomplete. 4) C. Mandelin Pros: Translates NPCs; Translator is a reliable professional. Cons: Research mostly published in unscripted video format; incomplete. 5) FF6j Original Script (as provided by kWHazit) Pros: Zero translation errors. Cons: Continuity errors in the original Japanese script; The author of this hack does not know Japanese. 6) Lina Darkstar Pros: Special effort to faithfully convey the original characters' personalities and the tone of major scenes. Cons: Errors; liberal paraphrasing; incomplete. Secondary sources: -- FF6 Improvement (DarkMage) -- Final Fantasy VI: Woolsey Uncensored Edition (Rodimus Primal) -- Final Fantasy VI: Stand Guard (Spooniest) > Originally inspired this hack's script to be punchier than Slattery's. Additional reference: -- Final Fantasy VI: Retranslated (hairy_hen) > Referenced as a quality standard during proofreading. Miscellaneous comments on the revised script: ----------------------------------------------- With few exceptions, the revised script is NOT intended to go above and beyond the quality already achieved by the original Japanese and the official translations. It is, however, intended to synthesize those efforts as well as possible, taking all available translation resources and revision efforts into account. Exceptions to the above consist of the following: > Numerous objective continuity errors and logical inconsistencies have been resolved, many for the first time. - Most of these are minor, with no significant impact on the plot: errors involving NPCs, character acquaintances, party size, etc. - Many involve play styles not typically adopted during more 'orthodox' playthroughs. > Actor labels have been added to generic dialog captions when the intended speaker is discernible by the action on screen. > Several particularly inspired (and tasteful) renderings by previous fan efforts have been included. Special privileges have been given to Woolsey as the first official translation. Novelties, iconic Woolseyisms, cultural references, and other deviations have been retained where they benefit the script and do not obscure the original intent of the line. Some enjoyable Woolseyisms have been omitted (with great pain), if they were irreconcilable with the game's plot or lore. Others have been salvaged via compromise with more accurate renderings, or, in rare cases, by simply adding the line at the end of the more accurate rendering. Special privileges have also been given to Slattery as the highest-quality official translation. > A number of Slattery's renderings which may seem like pure novelties at first glance are actually attempts to accurately convey the full meaning of an untranslatable phrase -- where a part of the meaning would be lost if a literal rendering were used. These have been given due consideration when identified as such by the author. Novelties are occasionally introduced by the author, usually for one of the following reasons: - Replace a Slattery novelty of higher complexity - Attempt to better capture the tone of an untranslatable phrase - Resolve a continuity error - Joy Figurative language has generally been encouraged in this revision, albeit with some reservations: - Words and phrases which emerged during or after the World War II era (1939+) are used as little as possible. - Similarly, figures of speech based on technology absent from the game's lore have been avoided. To sum up: Hopefully a bit more "reverent" than "revolutionary." ======================================== b. In-Menu text revisions ======================================== The following names have been revised/retranslated: - Enemies (ad-hoc up to 14 characters, minimal abbreviation) - Items (ad-hoc up to 16 characters, minimal abbreviation) - Abilities > Built on earlier hack "Restored Ability Names" (Angelo/SilentEnigma) > Dance names now retranslated without truncation > Field menu Esper list screen now displays the MP cost of the selected Esper. - Playable characters (Uses Woolsey names sans all caps) - Character stats The following have been revised/retranslated: - Miscellaneous field menu text > Some menu label choices sourced from Final Fantasy VI Relocalization Project (Dr. Meat). - Shopkeeper lines > Based loosely on FF6 Advance. - Item & ability descriptions > Sourced mainly from kWhazit's translation > FF6 Advance is referenced, but the new content introduced by FF6 Advance is mostly omitted. - Character class names now displayed in the status screen. > Built on earlier hack "Restored Ability Names" (Angelo/SilentEnigma) > Liberties previously taken by the author have been rolled back. Additional in-menu text: - Leet Sketcher's "Blitzscreen" (modifications by SilentEnigma) Small font character spacing has been improved throughout the game. ======================================== c. Quality-of-Life enhancements ======================================== A/B button functionality may be swapped from the config menu. - This button swap is extended to vehicle controls and Blitz input confirmation, which is a change from FF6j's button customization feature. - Tutorials referencing the A/B buttons adapt to the player's setting. - Config menu mod implementation is based on Madsiur's "Multiple Fonts" hack. Soft reset via Start+Select+L+R is available. - May be used any time a full-screen menu is not open. - The original game's soft reset, triggered only when the party is defeated on an unsaved game, has been modified to improve sound compatibility with some emulators. The player may elect not to continue the game after the party is defeated. - Player is given a "Continue? Yes/No" prompt following the "defeated" animation. Selecting "No" triggers a return to the title sequence. - Tutorial text has been updated accordingly. Wandering NPCs more readily yield ground to the player character. - The player character is now given priority over NPCs when attempting to move into an empty field map tile. - Navigating though crowded spaces is now a bit less of a struggle. Cancel button dash - Press the configured Cancel button (A or B) to double walking speed on the field. Effect stacks with Sprint Shoes. - Effect is disabled during timed challenges. - Based on ff3DashB (MasterZed) + Sliding Dash fix (SilentEnigma) "Y Equip/Relics" (Leet Sketcher w/ additional fixing by Subtraction) ======================================== d. Visual enhancements ======================================== Dialog captions now use the speaker quotation format standardized by FF6's successors. - Caption side margins are reduced to 8 pixels. - Field captions automatically indent for quotations. - In-battle caption transitions have been modified to reduce the occurrence of unmatched quotation marks. MP healing & MP damage numeral recoloring is achieved without affecting the reflected spells animation palette. - Earlier patch by Imzogelmo used as a base implementation. Censored graphics have been replaced by their uncensored counterparts: - Sprites for enemies, Espers, and mid-game bosses (Terii Senshi) - End-game boss art (Dr. Meat w/ additional fixing by SilentEnigma) - Pub signs (Dr. Meat) Intro graphics changed for the N.A. SNES release have been reverted (Yazoo): - The black and white splash screen preceding the title sequence has been removed. - Title sequence graphics and copyright text from the Japanese version have been restored. - The translator position has been removed from the opening credits. Silence spell animation graphics, which are localized in the N.A. SNES release, have been de-localized (Vivify93). The following additional visual enhancement patches have been included: - "Color Wheel" (Leet Sketcher) - "King's Robes" (Leet Sketcher) ======================================== e. Additional modifications ======================================== A limited selection of dummied-out character dialog & unfinished NPC content has been reconstructed. The music track used for on-foot WOR* world map navigation is kept constant. (Implementation published by SSJ Rick.) *Unspoiled newcomers to FF6 are advised against looking up this acronym. The author's preferred game configuration may be silently activated by holding the Select button as a new game is about to start. The configuration is as follows: - Bat.Mode Active - Bat.Speed 1 - Msg.Speed 3 - Cmd.Set Window - Gauge On - Sound Stereo - Cursor Memory - Reequip Optimize - Controller Single - Btn.A/B Swapped - Mag.Order 1 - Window 4 - Color Font | Window > R 31 | 5 5 6 4 26 24 2 > G 31 | 5 5 6 6 26 24 2 > B 31 | 14 16 17 15 26 24 2 The above window style is tuned to mimic the default blue gradient, with the window's texture serving as a pseudo-dithering effect. ======================================== f.
