Don’t think this is gonna be a 100% Gold Remake, it’ll have its differences. Extra battles (some’ll be optionals, tough but rewarding), Hoenn Pokemon (in every area, and hard to find) New areas, Remapped some dungeons (so your old guides wont work) , Extra recurring characters (some’ll hate you, some’ll help you)
Note that the hack is incomplete but feel free to enjoy the hack as-is.

DX patch version 3.4] What This Is: This IPS patch is a graphics enhancement for Super Mario Bros. for the NES and Famicom. Most of the graphics are original, but many are adapted from Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario All-Stars. You should use the ROM identified by most tools as: Super Mario Bros. (JU) (PRG0) [!].NES Files: SMBDX34.IPS - Version 3.4 SMBDX34.TXT - The file you're reading SMBDX20.IPS - The previous publicly released revision, 2.0 SMBDX11fix.IPS - The very old 1.1 release, but fixed for bugs (Yes, there were several versions not publicly released.) Purpose: This is has been developed off-and-on since the mid-1990s primarily for my own amusement and skill development. It makes a nice change of pace if you want improved graphics without going beyond the NES, and works well for enhancing levels-only or physics-only hacks of SMB1. Suggestions: Try combining this patch with one or more of the patches linked below. They've all been tested, but you might have to try different patching orders. SMB3-like physics, made by AP https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/168/ Fire Mario becomes Super Mario when hit, made by w7n https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3570/ Fix for semi-random flickering lines, made by rezb1t https://www.mediafire.com/file/wyzmgaknsoir659/smb_scanline_fix_v0.8.ips Originally intended Spiny egg behavior later seen in SMB3 https://tcrf.net/Super_Mario_Bros.#Unused_Spiny_Egg_Behavior Permissions: I make no claim to any graphics taken from Super Mario Bros. 3 or All-Stars. However, this does not apply to my own original art, so please check carefully. For use of my own original graphics (which is most of this patch) I ask only for credit in some form. As long as credit is given, you have blanket permission to use the original graphics from this patch in your own (noncommercial) ROM hacks, fan games, tools, etc. I don't require that you notify me, but it is appreciated if you do. ****************************************************************************** [What's New] Bug fixes: -Fixed iNES header corruption. Now works on Powerpak and very picky emulators. -Fixed a bug in the score board that would cause graphical errors on a real NES. -Several color choices corrected for real NES hardware on NTSC televisions. Graphics improved since last release: -Koopa Troopas bob up and down when they walk -Improved shading on the World 2-1 type background trees -Hills have trees on them instead indistinguishable lines -Bubbles under water look more rounded -Shaded the top of the flagpoles -Improved springboards -Draw bridges now look like something that could actually fall apart when using the axe -Fireballs in castle stages are no longer quite so pink -Bowser much better resembles Nintendo's modern renditions of the character -Major improvements to Peach's sprite -Replaced the (buggy) SMB3 bricks with new SMB1 ones based on All-Stars NEW graphics from scratch since last release: -Standard/Underground floor tiles -Standard/Underground obstacle/staircase blocks -Water/lava graphics -Underwater ground tiles -Castle tiles -Coral -Outdoor bridges -Pulleys -Bushes--and they are not recolored clouds! -Background clouds--and they are not bushes! -World 1-3 style tree top platforms -World 4-3 style mushroom platforms -The 1-tile-tall brick pedestal that springboards sit on -Coin grab animation -Moving platforms -Buzzy Beetle--now closer to modern versions. -Explosion/firework animation--works considerably better as fireworks now. -Lots of stuff I likely forgot. This is a huge revision since last release. Miscellaneous changes: -The title screen is much less crappy now. -Players with a real NES/Famicom or with accurate color emulation will get a sunset or dusk effect in palette changes across worlds 3 and 6. The Future?: This will likely be the final version, after starting the project roughly two decades ago. It's done. I don't foresee a reason to come back to it unless someone wants to work with me to add a mapper and expand the ROM. But I'm a pixel artist, not an ASM hacker, so I am satisfied with these results witin the limitations of the original ROM. SPECIAL THANKS: For the original patch, when I was on efnet and ZD as _Blues_: -AsTrOcReEp 2000, for his advice and documentation on color editing. -Sir_Kero, for locating some hex addresses for me, and for testing. -Skeeve/L0kii, who helped me figure out the debug in Pasofami LONG ago. -sl1me, for telling me where to find the cycling colors for the [?] boxes. -SnowBro, for TileLayer, which I used later in development. -Taichou, former maintainer of the Hacks page on Zophar's Domain. For the previous 2.0 update: -law56ker of xbox-scene, for liking my old work and wanting me to fix it. -Thraxen of xbox-scene, for contacting me about the problems with FCEU. -AP, Googie, and Hyperhacker at Acmlm's boards for technical help. -Romhacking.net for hosting the patch. Zophar's Domain ignored my request to update the file. :( For this 3.4 update: -All of my friends and family who offered opinions and helped test my work, especially: Nikki, Jason, Sir_Kero, -AND YOU!
